Crochet Hat Fit Checklist
Keep this short checklist beside your project. It helps you make a measured starting choice, check the fabric at the right moment, and decide what to change before the final stitch.
This is a planning tool, not a universal size chart. Your own washed gauge, the wearer and the finished fabric decide the final fit.
Use it in four small passes.
Tick each item as you work. If an answer is uncertain, pause and measure rather than continuing on a guessed stitch count.
Measure the wearer
- Measure head circumference where the hat will sit.
- Decide the intended coverage: brimless, ears covered, slouchy or fitted.
- Choose a pattern that matches the wearer and construction goal.
Wash the fabric you will wear
- Make a swatch in the actual yarn and stitch pattern.
- Wash and dry it as you expect to care for the finished hat.
- Count stitches and rows over a measured section—do not estimate from the hook label.
Pause before the finish
- Compare current circumference to your planned ease.
- Check crown depth and ear coverage on the wearer when possible.
- For features or earflaps, mark both sides from true front before attaching.
Test real use
- Check comfort, vision and movement—especially for children.
- Confirm edges recover after gentle stretch.
- Re-measure after washing and note what you would change next time.
Need a starting stitch count?
Use the calculator with your own circumference, ease choice and washed gauge. It gives you a transparent starting point; your fabric checks decide the finish.
